Bowled over by Brula Bistro!

When a good friend of Team Guerrillas dragged us to St. Margaret’s in Twickenham to visit a restaurant we thought, [this had better be good], as it’s not often ones such as us born North of the river Thames venture so far south!  Luckily it was easy to reach the restaurant by train (just 30 mins) from Waterloo.

Wow. What a treat. Brula is a beautiful French bistro with fantastic service and gluten free food!  That’s right – a French restaurant where flour wasn’t heaped into every dish – such a joy. Our friend had rung ahead to ensure they could cater for Coeliacs so when we visited mid-week for a late lunch we were able to relax and soak up the atmosphere and dine like Kings and Queens.

Brula’s website bills the bistro as:

“London’s finest Parisian restaurant and private dining experience…its beautiful stained glass, dark wood seating, parquet flooring, velvet curtains and large mirrors on every wall inspire a wonderful backdrop to the seasonally changing a la carte and set menus allowing for the very best in British produce and French cooking to be combined.”

We were pleased to find that the bistro lived up to the blurb on the website. Stepping into Brula was like being transported to Paris. Beautiful stained glass windows set the backdrop for a meal with a difference. The owner Lawrence was superb at catering for Coeliacs and we didn’t feel like fussy eaters one bit. A few tweaks here and there to the menu and we were set. The food and wine were divine! In fact we must’ve have taken at least 2 hours over our late lunch [well we were in a French Bistro - why not dine like the French eh?].  It was a treat to eat somewhere where you’re not hassled to be in and out in an hour – unlike many restaurants in Central London.

Brula offers fantastic service, great gluten free food in a beautiful setting and manages to pull this off at a reasonable price.  We always believe you can tell and great venue by the toilets – after all it’s all part of their branding and customer service.  The toilets here were emaculate with quirky wallpaper and a fantastic handwash so you’ll feel like you’re on holiday in a posh French hotel!

Average spend?

££ £40 for a meal for two

Great for….

..a romantic dinner, first date or a lunchtime natter with a good friend.

Worth the visit?

Definitely!  Certainly worth crossing London to get to. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Paris. Just make sure you introduce someone who really deserves to be treated to it !  Don’t dare waste it on anyone who isn’t a foodie.

Next time you’re looking for a bite to each – ditch the usual chain and support an independent restaurant that makes catering for Coeliacs a synch. Go go go! And don’t forget to tell them who recommended you visit ; )
